Painted Wall Nightfall

Painted Wall, the highest cliff in Colorado is located in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The pattern was formed by hot liquid from below the surface forcing its way into cracks in the rock of the cliff. We had a colorful sunset that evening and the main challenge was to balance the exposure for the bright sky and the dark canyon walls. I waited until the night sky got dark enough and in addition I used a 4 stop graduated neutral density filter to darken it furthermore. This is a single frame, not an HDR.
